Madison Cares and help frame a Habitat for Humanity house on the Madison
Green Saturday,
Sept. 27 - 9 am to 3 pm • Madison Town Energy Committee will sponsor the Green Your Home Fair What is 'Green on the Green' about? Madison Cares and the Madison Town Energy Committee are coming together on the Madison Town Green to sponsor a two-day event that will feature actual construction on Madison Cares’ fifth Habitat for Humanity house and a “Green Your Home Fair” that promotes energy efficiency. Framing for the new Habitat house will take place on the Madison Town Green Friday and Saturday, Sept. 26 and 27 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The completed work will be transported to its permanent location on Wilson Street in the Hill section of New Haven just south of Yale-New Haven Hospital. Many volunteers are needed to help with the construction. Experienced carpenters will oversee the work and safety training will be provided. Volunteers are asked to pre-register for a time slot by emailing Volunteers Committee Co-Chair Sandy Callinan at slc06443@msn.com. Questions can be directed to Maureen Lopes at (203) 245-9682. The new Habitat house will include many “green” features, such as 2x6 framing to accommodate thicker insulation, Energy Star appliances and insulated siding. Landon Lumber of Madison is a key sponsor for this event. Currently, Habitat homes designed by nationally acclaimed architect Duo Dickinson, are Energy Star-certified. According to Bill Casey, executive director of Habitat for Humanity of Greater New Haven, the goal is to build future homes that will be prototypes of non-profit “Green Building.” This will include using state-of-the-art building materials and techniques that will decrease the energy needs of the house, the selection of a location for the homes that is within walking distance of a variety of mass transit options, and initiating an intense recycling program to minimize construction waste. The “Green Your Home Fair” on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. will include community groups and vendors, who will be on hand with displays and demonstrations. There will also be opportunities to purchase easy-to-install energy savings items and meet with professionals for advice on major purchases and home improvements. For more information on exhibits and demonstrations, visit www.madisonenergy.org. Madison Cares (www.madisoncares.org) is dedicated to the elimination of poverty housing through community participation that includes financial support, volunteer labor and leadership for local, national and global Habitat for Humanity International builds. It is a combined effort of shoreline residents, civic organizations, faith communities and local businesses, under the leadership of Habitat for Humanity of Greater New Haven. Madison Cares' fourth house in four years, at 18 Shepard St., New Haven, will be dedicated on Sunday, Sept. 14 at 4 p.m. The Madison Town Energy Committee was appointed by the Board of Selectmen in 2007 to help Madison reduce overall energy consumption and promote clean energy initiatives for citizens. Through its efforts, hundreds have switched to clean energy in their homes and several major energy conservation efforts have begun in Madison’s public buildings. Event Sponsors
